The Largest Recycled Plastic Boardwalk in Europe

Green is the hottest buzzword in the design world right now. As more designers explore new ways to make the world more sustainable, Ecoplastic continues to collaborate with these pioneers – helping them reap all the structural and environmental benefits of recycled plastic.

A great example is the new car–free green corridor developed by Meath County Council. Ecoplastic was selected as the sole supplier of recycled plastic materials for the boardwalk at The Battle of the Boyne Visitors Centre in Drogheda. At 3.6m wide and 900m long, the now completed recycled plastic boardwalk is the largest in Europe.

Working closely with Meath County Council and their engineers, Roughan & O’Donovan,we drew on our 20 years of experience to answer all the tricky technical queries. A project of this scale demanded rigorous problem solving particularly when confronted with the difficult ground conditions.

The boardwalk makes up a large part of the 1.8km stretch of Phase 1 of the Boyne Greenway Project. Meath County Council Chairman, John V Farrelly, said:

”This is the first phase of what is hoped will be a world class cycling/walking facility along the River Boyne. We hope the success of Phase 1 will build momentum for the remaining phases to be progressed in 2014”.

In line with this trend for providing car–free corridors, or “Greenways” throughout Ireland, the Boyne Greenway will also link with a further 10km of trail to bring walkers and cyclists from Drogheda all the way to Bru na Boinne.

What we did:

  • Supply of all recycled plastic material
  • Design of balustrade and fixings
  • Overall construction and technical advice
